Fun pH Balance Experiments to do at Home

Step 1:

Place a heat safe glass onto the Magnetic Stirrer and Hot Plate. Into the glass, place room temperature water and chopped red cabbage. Turn the heat plate on and wait for the water to boil.

Step 2:

Once the water has begun to boil, turn the heat down and allow it to simmer for 20 minutes.

Step 3:

Remove it from the heat, and place the purple liquid into a smaller container, removing the large pieces. Begin with a liquid that has a low pH (e.g. white vinegar). Mix this liquid with a bit of the purple solution. The solution should turn into a reddish pink colour.

Step 4:

Next, choose a liquid that has a neutral pH balance of 7 (e.g. water). Combine this with the purple liquid. The color should not change much.

Step 5:

Lastly, pick a liquid that has a high pH (e.g. bleach). Combine this with the purple liquid. It should turn into a yellowish brown color.

Step 6:

Now, you can play around with other liquids and will be able to roughly figure out their pH by mixing it with this purple liquid!
